A guide to playing Baccarat - Rules and Tips

Quick guide to Baccarat

Maybe it’s not as popular as roulette or blackjack, but baccarat still holds its own as a favourite among the card and table games in any online casino. And of course, Wishmaker Casino has pulled out all the stops to offer you a selection of online baccarat variants that will leave you spoiled for choice.

Baccarat is easy to learn, gives heaps of excitement and, in our casino, it comes with a very low house edge. And just for you, we’ve compiled a guide to help you understand the game and use your insight to your advantage.

So, if you don’t know how to play baccarat but want to join in the fun, then you’ve come to the right place. Here we will run through the rules and get your wishes working and wanting to win!

Learning how to play Baccarat

Much like roulette, baccarat is a game where the outcome is based almost entirely on chance (plus some savvy bankroll management). When playing the game, you get to decide whether you want to bet on yourself, the banker or, a less popular option, the Standoff. At the start of the game, two cards will be dealt to both the player and the banker, and each hand is assigned a score. The highest total you can receive is a 9.

All cards that are 10 or higher, including the king and queen, have a zero-point total assigned to them. The lower-value cards ranging from ace to 9 get face value. And if you have two cards making a double-digit score, then the last number is used. Eh? OK, well, let’s say you have a 9 and a 6; they add up to 15, BUT only the second digit of 15 counts - which means that your point value for the hand is 5.

A player’s point total is what determines if they get another card. If their cards total 8 or 9, then they have a “natural” and get no more cards. Naturals win automatically unless the banker’s hand is a natural 9, or it ties with the player’s natural 8. If a player has a total of 6 or 7, then they stand, and, again, doesn’t draw a card. A third card is drawn if the player’s total is anything from 0 – 5. (If the banker has a natural 8 or 9, though, then the bank wins.)

All you need, then, is an understanding of the points system and some good judgement – you have to decide whether to bet on the dealer or the player, and that involves predicting who is most likely to reach a total equal or close to 9 first.

When you first open baccarat it might look confusing and complicated. But in truth it’s one of the best games to play as a beginner, or if you’re looking for a few hours of strategy-free fun.

The history of Baccarat

Baccarat is an old game. Very old, in fact – it’s one of the oldest casino games around. First played in the 14th century, it’s point of origin remains unresolved. Some believe that it started with French royals and nobility. Others think it comes from Italy – the name allegedly derives from an ancient Italian word for “zero”. And then there are those who suggest it started with a dice game so ancient that it dates back to the beginning of recorded history.

However baccarat came about, we’re glad it did – it gives us the opportunity to provide you, our players, with some straightforward fun. And just in case you were wondering, we have some special Wish-twists for your entertainment in our range of the baccarat variants.

The best bets in Baccarat

So how does the betting work? As mentioned above, you have three betting options when playing baccarat: you can bet against the banker, the player or a Standoff. The fun part is that it doesn’t matter if you bet against the player or the banker since both have an equal chance of winning. And with our low house edge on baccarat variants, you can easily cash in on plenty of winnings with this game.

While the Standoff bet might seem attractive, it is one most experienced players avoid. It pays out very rarely as it is only effective if the round is a draw – a possible but unlikely occurrence. Your best bet is the player or the dealer.

You will notice that some of our baccarat variants have side bets and if you’ve been playing baccarat for a while, then jump right in and try out these bets. If, however, you are new to baccarat, it would be wise to keep things simple and place stick with the bets on the dealer or the player until you’ve gained a little more experience.

A beginner’s strategy

Because baccarat is one of the biggest games of chance at the casino, there is no complicated strategy involved. It’s fun and easy, and some variants can even be tried and tested in the free play mode. Place small bets when starting out and watch and learn.
